Apple and the Foldable iPhone: Could It Set New Sales Records?

The first news about the possibility of starting production of a foldable iPhone bypassed technology enthusiasts at the end of last year, but unfortunately at that time it was only preliminary information, without a broader basis. We are currently in the middle of 2025 and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities, a renowned expert on the Asian supply chain, commented on the situation. According to him, production of the foldable iPhone is likely to begin as early as 2026. Investors should not miss it, as this novelty would potentially have a chance to push stagnant sales.

Apple and the Foldable iPhone: Could It Set New Sales Records?

Technological and design innovations

As part of the technical parameters, Kuo expects that this specific iPhone should be equipped with a display from Samsung Display, which already has the necessary experience in the production of foldable types of phones, and it is estimated that Samsung will produce up to 8 million of these panels. A number at this level indicates a high volume of production, and at the same time that Apple really believes in this project.

Of course, in the current initial phase, not all questions have yet been answered, for example on the technical side, details about the hinge remain a surprise. On the other hand, the final price tag also remains questionable, but as is the case with competing premium phones of this type, Apple is unlikely to be an exception, and the price will also be premium.

How is the market?

Foldable phones have been on the market since 2019, with companies such as Samsung and Huawei pioneering in this area. This type of device brings undeniable advantages, such as a large display similar to a tablet, but in a compact format that fits comfortably in the user's pocket. However, the technology is still in the early stages of development, and therefore foldable phones face problems such as breaks or grooves on the display, which so far rather discourages many customers, as evidenced by statistical numbers from TrendForce. In 2024, foldable models accounted for only 1.5%, but if expectations are met and Apple joins the race, the chance of growth in this share may increase, as Apple has long proven that it has always perfected the final design of its phones.

Traditional balance of opportunities and risks

The designer from Curpentino can therefore use the strength of his brand and the ability to innovate in order to take on leadership positions in this new segment. Given that iPhone sales have long accounted for more than half of Apple's revenue, it is clear that the company is trying to find new ways to attract customers and motivate them to make more frequent and expensive improvements to the Apple ecosystem. However, as we have already mentioned, Apple will face challenges not only in terms of technological innovation, but also in competition with established manufacturers that are already active in the foldable phone market, which is undoubtedly a risk to consider.

Conclusion

Apple's possible expansion into the foldable phone market represents a significant opportunity to boost overall sales, which from an investment perspective traditionally represents the potential to increase the intrinsic fundamental value of the company, which is the primary driver of the stock price. In addition, it is currently in a correction of 25%, which represents the potential to buy a company with prospective plans at a discounted price.*
